Jill, a reporter from Rochester inherits the Victorian house where her grandparents lived. Her grandfather was a an anthropology professor, a political axe grinder, and perhaps a diabolical killer. In these ancient walls, he murdered a young girl. But Jill doubts his guilt. Even after his suicide, similar murders continued to plaque Belcorte. Jill seeks the truth, but as she untangles events of the past, she steps closer to the fiend her grandfather had described as the monster of Belcorte. He raises his brood in a dark forgotten kingdom, abandoned decades ago. He is a survivor of horrific abuse that turned him into a monster, and he plans to unfold his wrath on Belcorte. Jill, in fact, is one of his chosen human sacrifices.

I'm not usually a horror fan, but a friend recommended this book for its literary writing and interesting story. I ended up not being able to put it down. The setting, characters, and story immediately drew me right in. I loved the character of Jill from the beginning, and wanted to know how things would turn out for her. I don't want to give the plot away, but let's just say it kept me turning the pages late into the night. (However, I'd recommend reading this during the day because parts of it gave me nightmares!). Another thing I really enjoyed were the moments of dark humor in this book. While it's a horror story filled with scary characters and nail-biting scenes, the writer drops in well-timed moments of wry humor that were highly enjoyable and added to character depth. Those were some of my favorite parts of the book because the offered some relief from the tension of the unfolding story. I also enjoyed the literary writing style in this book, which seems to be less and less common these days. As a former English major and lifetime bibliophile, I appreciate well-written phrases and talented writing. This author did not disappoint, and I can say his style is one of the strengths of this book. He was able to paint a picture with his words that enabled me to really immerse myself in the world of this book, and it was one heck of a ride, let me tell you! It also ended with a satisfying bang, yet in a completely unexpected way. It's a book I plan on re-reading again, just to savor all of the details of the well-built plot and detailed scenes. Highly recommend!

Mirrors of Anguish RP Kraul 9780985081881 Books Reviews

I really liked this book, it kept me guessing & held my attention from beginning to end, with a very different kind of plot that was filled with many characters and a complex story line that required your full attention throughout, which was easily attained because the book is written in such an intriguing and compelling fashion in reference to each & every character, as well as the unfolding story itself, it kept me from putting it down for very long at a time. I was a tad disappointed in how some of it played out in the last few pages, perhaps because I expected it to keep going & instead when it ended, it felt there were some unanswered questions, the door abruptly shut in your face. Overall, fantastic....love a book that can keep my interest from 1st page until the very end, & that is difficult to find too often, but I certainly found just that in this story. Thanks for a great read!
It took me awhile to digest the bit of bone this story left behind in my mouth. )

The writing in this book was often stunning. It forced me to go back and reread certain sentences and phrases again and again, which is something I love to do. R.P. Kraul can paint some seriously moody and creepy scenes with his words.

Parts of this book made me cringe, and I'm a been there, done that horror fan. I don't squirm easily, but there are particular scenes that will stay with me for a long time.

Jill was a fully-fleshed out character. I liked her, even though she sometimes contradicted herself and rushed a little too quickly into a relationship with Ben. I liked Ben, I really did, but I just couldn't picture the two of them together. But this isn't a romance book, so I can forgive that a little bit.

The other characters, and there are a lot of them, had distinct and unique personalities for the most part. At times though, I was confused because I couldn't remember exactly who was being referenced.

There were a few plot points I wished had been developed more, but all in all, this is a very good, very creepy read.
This book took me back to some of the truly great horror stories of HP Lovecraft. It had the suspense build up, where you knew something evil was lying under the surface. At first you would think this is a thriller story about a serial killer. Then you get a little over halfway through and everything goes to hell. I have to admit I had wtf moment then. I'm not going to spoil it for you because you need to experience it.

One of the great things about this book was the imagery that left scenes burned into my head for hours, or days after reading them. Mr. Kraul really knows how to build an atmosphere. The only issue I had was it started to drag a little in the last third of the book, but it quickly picked up at the end.

If you like horror and want to read with a light on, I suggest pick up this book.
